UEL UNISON AGM 2017 – 8th March

This year the AGM will take place at Docklands Campus on:

Wednesday 8th March 2017

1pm – 3pm


Docklands Campus

We will be providing lunch and refreshments for you.  As Unison members you are fully entitled to the time off to attend. Just let your Manager know.  We would like to see all members there as we will be discussing the changes that are happening at UEL.  We hope to have a speaker.  We would encourage those that work at Stratford or USS to travel to Docklands.

We always need Stewards or Workplace Contacts and this more so at Stratford Campus.  Any Officer post is available to be nominated for.  The current vacant posts are Communications Officer, Equalities Officer, Social Secretary and Membership Officer. The nomination form can also be found on our website.   These forms are also for completion by existing Officers and Stewards.

Save Our Language Centre: update

In summer, the university management commenced a consultation to close down the Language Centre at UEL, dismiss all 6 members of staff and outsource the work of the centre to Newham College or another organisation.

After a consultation which failed to meet the requirements of “genuine & meaningful”, UEL students, staff and unions launched a campaign to Save our Language Centre. In the course of the campaign over 750 signatures were received in a petition against closure.

The Language Centre staff and union representatives produced a counter proposal, which was a far more articulate, researched and evidence based poposal to the management one for closure.

However, university management have, to date, failed to act on the counter proposal and failed to agree to the demands of many hundreds of the UEL community.

We view this as a dangerous precendent and is something that the unions will continue to monitor and inform staff about. Be prepared for further actions.

EU Referendum consultation

As you will be aware the EU Referendum is on Thursday 23rd June.  Unison wants the member’s voices to be heard.

Your branch has been asked to consult you on this.

At UEL we have decided the most convenient way to do this is by survey monkey.

There are just five questions to answer.  The consultation will close on 5th April.

All members are invited to attend.

What’s the AGM all about – what happens at the AGM?

The Annual General Meeting is the most important event of the UEL UNISON calendar and takes place every year. It is an opportunity for all UEL UNISON members to decide on how the union works and what it does for the next year.

We hope that the meeting will be a good mix of information, discussion, decision making and an opportunity to network with other UEL UNISON members.

In the meeting:

  • You decide on what we do with our money – and approve or otherwise our accounts
  • You elect our stewards and officers for the forthcoming year.
    • We particularly need more stewards at Stratford!*
  • There will debate on any motions submitted to the AGM (proposals for the union to take a position on an issue and take particular actions on the issue)**
  • We will also review the past year and let you know of plans for the forthcoming year
  • Find out what is happening at other London Universities and also a national update.

*If you are interested in putting yourself forward to be a steward or officer of the local branch, or you would like to speak to someone about what this entails, please feel free to contact any current UNISON representative, or Sue Parkin, UEL UNISON branch secretary S.E.Parkin@uel.ac.uk

**If you feel strongly that UEL UNISON should take a particular position on an issue and to take particular action on that issue, you can submit a motion (a proposal on the issue) to the Annual General Meeting to decide on. Please inform your manager now that you are plan to attend, so that he/ she has plenty of notice.  You are allowed time off to attend Union meetings, so please make use of this agreed arrangement.

A huge thank you to everyone who has made a donation towards the Francisca Fund so far. With your help we have so far managed to raise just over £1750 through our online appeal for donations. This is additional to approximately £900 raised in cash contributions made by Francisca’s colleagues in the cleaning team, bringing the total raised to around £2700.

We would like to thank NVIRO, Francisca’s employer who made a very generous donation towards this total.

This means that we have raised a substantial amount to help Francisca’s family with the repatriation costs, which was estimated at approximately £5 -6,000.

If you know of any other UEL colleagues, ex colleagues or friends who may wish to support this appeal – please refer them to this website,  as we are still receiving donations to reduce the financial burden on Francisca’s family at this difficult time.

We will also be posting updates on the website and on our Facebook page (UEL UNISON) to let you know how the fundraising is going.

Francisca came to London via Madrid nearly 6 years ago from her native Dominican Republic and started working at UEL from August 2010.
In the last year Francisca had been diagnosed with cancer and was off work whilst undergoing treatment. Unfortunately, Francisca passed away on Saturday 28th March, aged just 57.

Francisca was a hardworking, vivacious and generous woman, who will be sorely missed by her family and many friends at UEL and in her community.
UEL UNISON will remember her, in particular, for her activism and the central role she played in the successful campaign for the London Living Wage at UEL.

Francisca had a strong sense of social justice and a passion for learning. This was best demonstrated by her full (vocal) participation in all of the employment rights training courses and English classes organised by UEL UNISON.

Entertaining, caring and gregarious – Francisca’s loud laughter could be heard from one end of the atrium to the other. She loved talking (and practising her English) and she loved singing. In fact, her singing can be heard across the world on the internet on the Youtube clip “The Cleaners Voice”

UEL UNISON are fundraising to try and support her family at this difficult time. Francisca’s family will be taking her back to her native Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, where her son and most of her relatives are. Unfortunately, the costs of repatriation is approx. £6,000. This is a huge financial burden on the family and so every pound we can raise will assist Francisca –

Joint Union Statement – Performance Management Reviews

You may recall before the Professional Services Review that management expressed an intention to change the Staff Development Review (SDR).  Some of you may also have been involved in pilots of the proposed new scheme in the past year and registered concern about the new scheme both to unions and to management.  In the mid-summer management advised the Unions that they intended to go ahead and implement the scheme with effect from 1st September.

The Joint Unions raised objections to this and made representations to the Chair of the Board of Governors on your behalf.  Following an initial impasse, which required intervention by ACAS, discussions with a view to reaching an agreement on the proposals have commenced between management and the Joint Unions.

It is too early to predict what the outcome of these negotiations will be but early discussions have been both productive and constructive.  We will report on the discussions to our various branches fully at meetings, our next meetings with management will be on 30th October and 4th November.

Please make every effort to attend all forthcoming branch meetings as it is vital that you hear and consider these discussions.
